Diabetic retinopathy occurs from complications of diabetes. Eighty percent of all patients who have diabetes extending over ten years are affected. That’s the bad news. The good news is 90 percent of cases that are new can be minimized or reduced when properly treated and monitored. Warning signs are few if any. But, if you are diabetic, there are lifestyle changes that can take a lot of the worry out of this complication.

A highly problematic autoimmune disease, diabetes is demonstrated by abnormally high levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood. Within that definition there are two forms—type 1, previously known as juvenile diabetes; and type 2. For those with type 1 diabetes, issues regarding the eyes begin to show on average about seven years after diabetes begins. However, the threat of vision impairment from diabetic retinopathy is not likely to develop until sometime farther down the road.

Retinopathy in type 2 diabetics, however, appears upon diagnosis of their diabetes or soon thereafter. The reason for such quick appearance of the condition is tied to time. Type 2 diabetes onset is gradual and possible changes can be going on long before the type 2 diabetes is even diagnosed or discovered.

Progressive deterioration occurs in three stages for diabetic retinopathy. All involve an initial leaking or accumulation of fluid within the retina.

  1. Micro Aneurysms occur in early stages of the disease and blood vessels in the retina develop weak spots.
  2. Macular Edema involves swelling around the macula is caused by fluid leakage.
  3. Proliferative Retinopathy is the most critical and dangerous. Growth of new blood vessels occurs and leads to acute loss of vision when they rupture or bleed.

How or why diabetic retinopathy comes about remains a mystery. One possibility may be a signaling protein [VEGF] that gets secreted into the eye. It is a response to internal damage that comes from the disease itself.  Additionally, other studies point to higher levels of cholesterol and triglycerides together with high blood pressure which together are believed to be contributing factors. And though these eye conditions can happen in people without diabetes, individuals with diabetes are at much higher risk for these complications.

So what can be done to protect against diabetic retinopathy? Eye health is critical and its importance cannot be stressed enough. These easy to incorporate principles can help. A diet high in alkaline plant-based foods so acid retention by the body can be reduced, a keeping of cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure in check when eating lots of these plant-based unrefined foods, an elimination or reduction of all forms of meat products, elimination of processed foods and a return to cooking fresh foods, increased hydration preferably with good high quality readily absorbable water like honest mountain spring water or alkaline-ionized water, high quality beneficial supplements some in the form of green drinks or capsules, a routine of regular exercise and good quality sleep because it facilitates healthier eyes and a healthier you.

With regard to treatment, the National Eye Institute of the National Institute for Health recommends laser surgery. It has become an effective technique that causes abnormal blood vessels to shrink. The NEI goes on to encourage comprehensive dilated eye exams together with control of blood sugar levels, blood pressure and blood cholesterol. When a problem has the potential of occurring, if spotted early a positive outcome is more likely to occur.
