LA Marathon Means Endurance and World Class Doctors are About to Change the Face of Sport

March in Los Angeles is marathon month. This Sunday marks the 24th LA Marathon. A sold out crowd of twenty-six thousand will participate. And at the end, some will never get there but most will. Feet will be blistered and smiles will be on faces. A feat will be accomplished like none other. In 1991, I was 47 years old and I finished the LA Marathon right behind a little woman of the ripe age of 83. That year the event was only in its 5th year. Exhilaration reigned supreme.

Hydration was the most critical thing to remember to do. A must to any endurance sport, proper and adequate hydration means the difference between finishing and fainting on the course. Without essential hydration, your muscles and joints show no mercy. Heart attacks have been known to happen and fainting is fairly common. Water stations, all 76 of them, are well maintained, but what kind of water are you getting. Imagine if you could get enough water on the course…micro-clustered, ionized water…just how much better everyone would be. Lactic acid is the nemesis of athletes. It builds up from use of your muscles and can cause pain if you don’t move it out of the system. You need good water to serve that job.

Bearing in mind that you have access to alkalized water, but not a cooler to carry it, it is still better to start with a semi-frozen bottle or two of alkalized water if at all possible. Now let’s look at some additional ways to enhance performance. In the face of grueling torture done for fun, desire for heightened performance is still at the front of an athlete’s mind. Once hydrated, the desire to increase peak performance is where it’s at. This takes hours of training and preparation and the most increase you might see in your ventilatory rate [VT] on a good day would be 2%.

But what if you were able to get a negative split? Meaning, what if you could run a faster 2nd half than 1st half? What if you could increase your ventilatory threshold to 8% or 9% without drugs? And what if you could reduce your heart rate and speed up recovery? Would that be worth learning about?
