Senators Boxer and DeFazio Presenting New GMO Food Labeling Bill

Two weeks ago I wrote an extensive article on the despicable actions of chemical company Monsanto and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO). In the middle of the night, prior to the bill being presented, they wrote and inserted Section 735 into HR 933—a bill intended to deal with the budget. The next day, their late night work, aptly called the Monsanto Protection Act, was squeezed into the bill and passed the Senate. The provision gives protection to chemical companies against being sued in Federal court for potential issues that may arise from genetically engineer [GE] seeds and genetically modify organisms [GMO].

boxer Senators Boxer and DeFazio Presenting New GMO Food Labeling BillFortunately next week, Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Peter DeFazio (D-OR) are going to be introducing new Federal legislation that will require labeling of all genetically engineered [GE] foods in the U.S. This is the first time in a decade a labeling bill is coming to the floor of the Senate. According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, sixty-four countries have mandatory labeling policies for GE foods. The United States, shamefully, is not one of them.

Of developed countries, the European Union along with the U.K., Japan, Brazil, Australia, South Korea, South Africa and many, many others have already banned genetically modified food organisms. For America, so far this year twenty-eight states have introduced 53 GE labeling bills. Hawaii, Washington, Indiana, Missouri and Vermont are among them. Unfortunately, Proposition 37 in California requiring labeling went down in a narrow defeat last November, but they continue to fight for labeling. The point is made in my warning about California strawberries. They are genetically modified and if you don’t want to eat pesticide affected berries, check the label. Mexico may be a safer bet than California. Please note, I said “may.”

Much is riding on this matter. So long as our congress members are getting paid by us $174,000 a year, you and I have every right to demand they do right by us.

SO LET’S TAKE ACTION NOW!

Tell your Senators and Representative to get on board with and Co-Sponsor the GE food labeling bill! It is a matter of life or death.
