Our legislative system works! And Congress does listen, but you have to be proactive.
Earlier today I spent an hour contacting Senators Boxer, Feinstein, Durbin, McCain and Kyl. Did I talk directly with them? No, but I spoke to live people in their offices three out of the five telephone calls made and was able to put messages on voice mails for the other two. Then I tweeted and retweeted about twenty times and sent emails out through the Alliance for Natural Health website. All to stop the passage of Amendment 2127 in the Senate.
I started my campaign at 1 pm ET. At 1:50 ET I stopped the calling. Time was running down. Senate bill S.3187, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act with Amendment #2127, was coming to the floor at 2 pm ET. Senators Durbin and Blumenthal, the amendments sponsors, were speaking at the same time word was spreading around the country with citizens doing all things possible to stop this bill from passing. Why? It would have created an entirely new law requiring further FDA regulations on supplements resulting in an undoing of current law and regulations and imposing extraordinary and unnecessary costs on supplement manufacturers.
At 1:30 pm PT, a visit to the Alliance for Natural Health website told me the good news. The Anti-Supplement Amendment was defeated! A huge victory. Readers of this website sent 90,000 messages in under 24 hours and it successfully lost to a resounding 77 votes to 20. Exactly what was needed!
According to CitizensForHealth.com, “The failed amendment would have been a product registration nightmare creating burdensome and unnecessary registration of all safe dietary supplements, moving supplement labeling submission requirements that much closer to drug-like regulations that we see in Canada and Europe today.”
For many reasons this amendment being voted down is a milestone. It proves Congress can hear us and bi-partisanship can work. We must speak up. Bless the internet, email and the telephone. At 10 o’clock Pacific Time this morning, I got the message that started my wheels moving. By 2 pm ET everyone’s actions had paid off and the outcome posted to the internet. Senate Bill S.3187 with Amendment #2127 was DEFEATED!
